Staff Selection Commission has opened the Junior Engineer Examination 2026 - 1,748 posts, Level-6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix (Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400). Notice F. No. HQ-C-3019/1/2026-C-3, uploaded 02.09.2026. Applications close 22 SEPTEMBER 2026 at 23:00. THIS IS AN ALL-INDIA EXAMINATION with no domicile requirement. SSC runs centres in every region - the North Western Region alone lists Srinagar, Jammu, Samba, Chandigarh, Shimla, Hamirpur, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Bathinda, and there are eight other regions covering the rest of the country. You give three centre preferences within one region. A THREE-YEAR DIPLOMA IS ENOUGH FOR MOST OF THESE POSTS. You do not need a B.Tech. For CPWD, Central Water Commission, Brahmaputra Board, Farakka Barrage, CWPRS and NTRO, a diploma in the relevant branch is the full essential qualification with no experience bar. Where a degree is listed as the route - BRO, MES, DGQA-Naval, DGLL - the notice gives a parallel diploma-plus-two-years-experience route. AND THERE IS A NON-ENGINEERING ROUTE MOST LISTS LEAVE OUT. The same examination recruits SCIENTIFIC ASSISTANT in the India Meteorological Department, where a B.Sc with Physics as a subject qualifies you - or a degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, ECE, Instrumentation, IT or Telecommunication. If you hold a B.Sc Physics , this examination is open to you and almost nobody is telling you that. FOURTEEN ORGANISATIONS ARE HIRING. Border Roads Organization, Central Public Works Department, Military Engineer Services, Central Water Commission, Brahmaputra Board, Central Water and Power Research Station, DGQA-Naval, Farakka Barrage Project, NTRO, Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships, Department of Telecommunications, India Meteorological Department and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. THERE IS NO STATE-WISE QUOTA - AND SSC SAYS SO ITSELF. Paragraph 3 of the notice states that state-wise and zone-wise vacancies are NOT collected by the Commission. The 1,748 is an all-India figure filled on open merit, and the post-wise and category-wise split will be published separately at ssc.gov.in under For Candidates then Tentative Vacancy. If a job site quotes you a state-wise seat count for this examination, it is inventing it. AGE, as on 01.08.2026: up to 30 for most posts, up to 32 for CPWD and for Lighthouses & Lightships. Born between 02.08.1996 and 01.08.2008 for the 30-year posts; 02.08.1994 to 01.08.2008 for the 32-year posts. FEE IS Rs 100 - AND WOMEN PAY NOTHING. Women candidates and SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen candidates are fully exempt. So does a degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology, Telecommunication Engineering or Communication Engineering. Age up to 30. A B.Sc Physics graduate is eligible for this examination. Experience, where required, must have been gained AFTER completing the qualification. Internship, training and research done during the course does not count. AGE, crucial date 01.08.2026 30-year posts: born 02.08.1996 to 01.08.2008. 32-year posts: born 02.08.1994 to 01.08.2008. Relaxation: SC/ST 5 years, OBC 3, PwBD (UR/EWS) 10, PwBD (OBC) 13, PwBD (SC/ST) 15, Ex-Servicemen 3 years after deducting military service. NOTE: there is NO ESM reservation in this examination - these are Group B posts - but ESM age relaxation still applies. EXAMINATION PATTERN Paper-I, Computer Based, 2 hours, 200 marks: General Intelligence & Reasoning 50, General Awareness 50, and your chosen engineering subject 100. Negative marking 0.25 per wrong answer. Paper-II, Computer Based, 2 hours, 100 questions for 300 marks, in your subject only. Negative marking ONE FULL MARK per wrong answer - guessing in Paper-II is expensive. Qualifying marks in both: UR 30 per cent, OBC and EWS 25 per cent, all other categories 20 per cent. PAPER-I IS ONLY QUALIFYING. Final merit is decided on normalised Paper-II marks alone. Separate merit lists are drawn for JE Civil, JE Electrical & Mechanical, JE Telecom and Scientific Assistant IMD. ODL WARNING: engineering qualifications obtained through Open and Distance Learning or online mode are not accepted, except where the statutory body permits and UGC notifies it. You must complete a fresh OTR at ssc.gov.in before you can even open the application form. Do it now, not on the closing day. Opt for AADHAAR-BASED AUTHENTICATION during OTR. The notice gives a real benefit: your form will not be rejected on the ground that your photograph or signature fails the prescribed standards, and you will not need to carry a colour photograph and original photo-ID to the examination venue. Fee once paid is never refunded or adjusted. EXAMINATION CENTRES SSC lists centres across nine regions. You may give THREE centre preferences in order of priority, and all three must be in the SAME region. No change of centre is allowed later under any circumstances, so check which region your city falls in before you fill the form.
