India Post has notified its Gramin Dak Sevak engagement for Schedule-II, July 2026, under notification 17-12/2026-GDS. The posts are Branch Postmaster, Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak. The educational requirement is a 10th standard pass certificate with passing marks in both Mathematics and English, from a recognised board, together with the local language of the applicant's chosen circle studied up to 10th standard. No experience is required and no qualification above matriculation is sought. There is no examination at any stage. Merit is computed from the marks obtained in the 10th standard examination and nothing else. Where a board cancelled its examination during the Covid-19 pandemic and passed all candidates, the system awards a uniform 66.67 per cent. Ties are resolved first by older date of birth, then through the notified category order beginning with ST transwoman and ST female applicants. Age is 18 to 40 as on the closing date of 21 September 2026, with relaxation of 5 years for SC and ST, 3 for OBC, 10 for PwBD, 13 for PwBD with OBC and 15 for PwBD with SC or ST. Remuneration is a Time Related Continuity Allowance slab: Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 a month for Branch Postmaster, and Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470 for Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak. A Branch Postmaster is required to reside in the post village where the Branch Office functions, and to provide accommodation meeting the Department's prescribed standard before engagement. On vacancy numbers, a caution worth stating: the notification carries no circle-wise or division-wise figures. It refers candidates to the online portal for the tentative division-wise position, and that portal opens on 31 August 2026. The "25,000+" total circulating on job sites does not appear in the notification and should be treated as an estimate until the portal publishes the real division figures. The fee is Rs 100, and is waived entirely for all female applicants and for SC, ST, PwBD and transwomen applicants. The schedule runs in three stages: one-time registration from 31 August to 19 September up to 1700 hrs; submission of applications and payment of fee from 2 September to 21 September up to 1700 hrs; and a correction window on 23 and 24 September. Registration must be completed before an application can be submitted. UPDATE, 2 SEPTEMBER: THE NUMBERS ARE OUT India Post has published the circle-wise position now that the portal is open. The national total is 23,757 - not the "25,000+" that was circulating before the figures existed. The JAMMU AND KASHMIR CIRCLE carries about 340 of them, across the Jammu, Srinagar, Baramulla, Rajouri and Udhampur divisions. Treat that circle figure as indicative: it comes from the portal's published circle list rather than from a document we have been able to read end to end, and the exact division-wise and category-wise split is shown inside the portal once you have registered. The vacancy count on this listing shows the J&K circle figure of 340 rather than the national 23,757, because our board caps that field at 9,999. Registration is open now and closes 19 September. Applications run to 21 September, 5 PM. You choose your division after seeing its vacancies, so register first, then look at what is actually available in Jammu, Srinagar, Baramulla, Rajouri or Udhampur before setting your preferences.

WHO CAN APPLY A Secondary School Examination pass certificate - 10th standard - WITH PASSING MARKS IN BOTH MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH, from a board recognised by the Government of India, a State Government or a Union Territory. That is the whole educational requirement. There is nothing above it and no experience is asked for. You must also have studied the local language of the circle you apply to, up to 10th standard. For the JAMMU AND KASHMIR CIRCLE - which the notification defines as covering J&K AND LADAKH - the local language is URDU OR HINDI. Either qualifies. AGE 18 to 40 years, determined as on the last date for submission of applications, 21 September 2026. Relaxation above the 40-year limit: SC and ST 5 years, OBC 3 years, PwBD 10 years, PwBD with OBC 13 years, PwBD with SC or ST 15 years. THE THREE POSTS Branch Postmaster (BPM) - TRCA slab Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 a month. Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak - TRCA slab Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470. A BPM must live in the post village itself - the village where the Branch Office functions - and provide accommodation meeting the Department's prescribed standard. A declaration to that effect is required before engagement. Weigh that before choosing BPM as a preference. SELECTION - NO EXAMINATION AT ALL There is no written test and no interview. Merit is computed from the marks you obtained in the 10th standard examination, entered from your own marksheet at the application stage. Nothing else is scored. Candidates whose board cancelled the examination during the Covid-19 pandemic and issued a pass certificate to all candidates are awarded a uniform 66.67 per cent by the system; such applicants select "Pass" against each subject when applying. Where two applicants tie on merit, the order of preference is: older date of birth first, then ST transwoman, ST female, SC transwoman, SC female, and so on down the notified order. VACANCY NUMBERS The notification does NOT print circle-wise or division-wise vacancy figures. It directs candidates to the online portal, where the tentative division-wise position is published. Those figures become visible when registration opens on 31 August 2026 - so the Jammu & Kashmir number is not yet a published fact, whatever some job sites are reporting.

Divisions and post preferences are then presented according to the local language studied at 10th standard. FEE Rs 100, covering all posts notified within the chosen division. Payment is exempted for all female applicants and for SC, ST, PwBD and transwomen applicants. VACANCIES The tentative division-wise vacancy position is published on the portal rather than in the notification, and becomes available when registration opens on 31 August 2026.
